Urgent Appeal for Darfur Refugees in Chad: Shelter, Food, and Relief Needs
Since April 15, 2023, over 300,000 people have fled Darfur, Sudan, seeking refuge in neighboring Chad. This exodus was sparked by violent clashes between the Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), primarily in the capital, Khartoum, and western Darfur. Thousands of these displaced individuals are now stranded in makeshift camps in Chad, including roughly 33,000 refugees in the Ourang camp. They are in dire need of food, shelter, and basic supplies as the rainy season has exacerbated their already desperate situation.
Islam, one of the many refugees in Ourang, stood in front of her collapsed tent, pleading for urgent help: "Please provide us with shelter as soon as possible. This is humiliating. Everyone here has lost three to five family members and came with nothing to eat or drink," she tearfully shared. Her voice represents the pain of thousands who are now battling not only the trauma of war but the harsh elements in Chad’s refugee camps.
The situation worsens daily, as heavy rains and strong winds destroy flimsy tarpaulin tents, leaving many refugees exposed to the elements. Families huddle under blankets in the cold, struggling to stay warm and dry. The onset of the rainy season has made it nearly impossible for aid agencies to reach refugees, with flooding and difficult terrain limiting access to the camps.
In recent attacks, such as one on Sirba in western Darfur, over 200 civilians were killed, driving thousands more across the border to Chad. Refugees report that back home, shortages of food, electricity, and water have made survival impossible amid constant violence. Many fled on foot or on donkey carts, arriving in Chad with no resources, only to find further hardship on the other side.
This is a call for immediate assistance. Shelter, food, clean water, and medical supplies are urgently needed for the thousands of Darfur refugees facing harsh conditions in Chad. Every donation, no matter the size, can help save lives.
How You Can Help:
$500 can provide emergency food rations for a family for a month.
$800 can help supply tarpaulins and basic shelter materials.
$1000 can assist in providing clean drinking water for hundreds of families.
Larger contributions can support building long-term solutions like better shelter infrastructure, health clinics, and food programs.
